THE MTN DEW REAL CHANGE CHALLENGE CELEBRATES HBCU STUDENTS WORKING TOWARD GREATER INCLUSION IN THE GAMING COMMUNITY.
In 2022, MTN DEW® set out to address the lack of Black gamers in esports. By establishing the MTN DEW Real Change Challenge, we hope to level the playing field and increase Black representation in all facets of gaming. As lead Senior Art director I was tasked to develop the campaign’s visual identity which included the logo, color palate, landing page, social content, partnerships and merch line.
The Challenge: Esports. A multi-billion dollar arena, yet one starkly lacking in Black representation. In 2022, MTN DEW didn't just want to enter this space; they aimed to ignite a seismic shift. The mandate for the "Real Change Challenge" was audacious: not merely to acknowledge the disparity, but to actively dismantle barriers, level the playing field, and forge a tangible path for Black gamers to dominate. The problem: how do you articulate this profound mission with a visual identity that is authentic, empowering, and resonates with both the gaming community and the broader cultural conversation?
My Strategic Directive: As Senior Art Director, my vision was to transcend traditional brand activation and engineer a visual identity that was, in itself, a declaration of intent. This wasn't about aesthetics alone; it was about weaponizing design to amplify a critical social mission. I orchestrated a visual language that was vibrant, unapologetic, and deeply rooted in the energy of gaming culture, yet bold enough to signify a genuine movement. My strategy was to create a brand within a brand – a visual system that inspired action, celebrated emerging talent, and visibly championed equity.
Leadership & Problem-Solving: I commanded the entire visual identity development for this groundbreaking initiative, leading the charge from conceptualization to the execution of every touchpoint. This involved:
Defining the Visual Ethos: Architecting the core visual system, including the campaign logo and color palette, to embody the challenge's dual essence: the dynamic energy of esports and the profound impact of real change.
Ecosystem Design: Overseeing the strategic development and flawless execution of the visual experience across diverse platforms – from the immersive landing page that served as the campaign's digital hub, to compelling social content that fueled engagement and advocacy.
Strategic Partnerships & Merch: Guiding the visual integration for key partnerships, ensuring seamless brand alignment, and curating a merchandise line that served as a tangible badge of honor for participants and supporters, extending the campaign's reach and message beyond the screen.
Authenticity & Resonance: Solving the complex problem of creating a campaign that felt genuinely empowering to the Black gaming community, avoiding performative allyship, and ensuring every visual element contributed to the challenge's core mission of equity.
The Impact: The MTN DEW Real Change Challenge, propelled by its distinctive and powerful visual identity, wasn't just a campaign; it was a catalyst for systemic change. It shattered barriers, amplified voices, and demonstrably increased Black representation within the esports landscape. This strategic art direction didn't just build brand affinity; it ignited a cultural conversation and cemented MTN DEW's legacy as a true force for progress in a critical industry.
